Microbiologist, Product Development


New Leaf Symbiotics (NLS), an agricultural biologicals company is looking for a Microbiologist (Scientist/Senior Scientist) with experience in the use of microorganisms as live agricultural products. NLS company headquarters and laboratories are located at the BRDG Park facility at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, in St. Louis, Missouri.  We are seeking an individual with a passion for sustainable agriculture and biological solutions, who will be responsible for the development of new microbial based products.

Microbiologist Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Grow and harvest bacteria, using aseptic technique, to produce and maintain materials as needed.
  • Creation, curation, and preservation of bacterial cell banks made for various uses in R&D, PD, expansion of NewLeaf strain collection, and external cooperators.
  • Maintain detailed records of experimental data.
  • Assists with on-site pilot plant activities including all upstream and harvest activities.
  • Understands biological products including natural products chemistry and microbial physiology of bacteria, filamentous bacteria, and fungi.
  • Energetic and self-motivated individual able to work in a team environment with relentlessly progressing schedules.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with R&D, regulatory, management, and external collaborators.
  • Expected to consistently deliver high quality scientific presentations internally and at external conferences.
  • Assist with general lab maintenance duties including media and solution preparation, general equipment maintenance, cleanliness, and organization of the laboratory, and ordering common supplies.
  • Assist with other related lab and greenhouse projects as needed to help NewLeaf Symbiotics meet its objectives.



  • Requires a PhD with 0-2 years, an MS with 3-5 years or a BS with 10+ years relevant experience. Degrees/experience in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Bacterial Physiology, or related field.
  • Knowledge of advanced techniques and principles in microbiology.
  • Energetic and self-motivated individual with the ability and desire to work independently as well as in a collaborative team-environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, problem solving skills, and a detail-oriented approach.


  • Experience with aseptic techniques and culture of microorganisms without the inclusion of selective antibiotics.
  • Hands-on experience operating laboratory bioreactors recommended.
  • Experience in a commercial or academic research laboratory environment in the field of microbiology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, microbial fermentation, or industrial microbiology, with an emphasis in microbial applications in agriculture.
